Yes, I love dogs; my husband loves cats. I'm in the picture above, really; you can just make out my head and left arm at the upper right side of the bed, between Gilbert on the left, and his sisters Mary Jane and CeCe on the right. The other two dogs are Geoffrey and Mali. The two calico cats are Merry and Pippin; we've also got Nick Fury, Harlan, Allie, Rosie, Darla.
I was born (mumble mumble) years ago in the gorgeous state of South Carolina. I am lucky enough to still live here, in a tiny yet glorious old house that's built around a one-room-with-loft log cabin dating to 1818. We have five acres surrounded by woods, with a barn, an outhouse, several streams and a vegetable garden. This year we're growing: heirloom tomatoes, corn, okra (a Southern necessity), potatoes, hot and mild peppers, squash, peas, eggplant....well, you get the idea. I can lots of the veggies--a dying art, I'm afraid--and make chow chow and pickles and all that. These and cooking are my only homey-type talents, as I take pride in being the world's worst housekeeper. I figure that if enough dog hairs collect on our pine floors, we won't need carpets. Plus: great insulation! Besides, I don't eat off the floor--usually--and if anyone else doesn't like it, they're welcome to grab a broom and sweep.
This is Gilbert, all grown up, though mostly he grew out. He's lost some weight since this picture, but he's still plump.
My house, as I mentioned, is tiny: one bedroom, a good-sized kitchen, a small living room, a bath with clawfoot tub, a pantry. Upstairs, my writing office is in the loft, with access up ragged old stairs from the front porch. It's wonderful for writing! I'm so grateful every day that I have the chance to live here.
This is the road at the end of our driveway, during the flood of October 2005. You can see our green mailbox, and the yellow/black striped sign is in the middle of the bridge that spans the flooded Richland Creek.
This is the bridge--or what's left of it--after the flood. Geoffrey and I are checking out the damage. Both of us have lost weight since then. He's on a diet, and I've taken up square dancing. My husband Jerry is a wonderful dancer; I try to keep up. I'm also getting into bellydancing.
I have lots of books in my house--what writer doesn't? I have too many favorite authors to list, and I also love history--English, though sometimes other countries sneak in--and biographies of explorers and writers and such. My reading tastes are eclectic, and can range from Heinlein, Asimov, Ellison, ERB, Patrick O'Brian (love his Aubrey/Maturin novels!) to Rex Stout, Elizabeth Peters, Lester Dent, Dorothy Leigh Sayers, Margery Allingham...well, you get my drift. I read a lot. Always have. I remember that I couldn't wait to learn to read, and I haven't stopped since.
MY PERFECT DAY: 1. Sleep late. 2. Have a great breakfast with my gorgeous husband Jerry. 3. Go upstairs and check my email. 4. Write something that I think is good. 5. Do some gardening. 6. Have a great supper with my gorgeous husband Jerry. 7. Watch something interesting or go to a movie. 8. Go to bed early with my gorgeous husband Jerry. It just doesn't get any better than that....
